Self-Healing Digital Twins for Manufacturing Process Resilience

The implementation of self-healing digital twins (SHDTs) is revolutionizing industries by transforming how manufacturing systems monitor, manage, and optimize their operations. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the concept, benefits, and challenges associated with SHDTs, focusing on their role in enhancing operational efficiency, reducing downtime, and improving product quality. Self-healing digital twins autonomously detect faults, predict potential failures, and optimize system operations in real-time, resulting in substantial reductions in maintenance costs and improved resource allocation. The methodology includes a systematic literature review of existing research on the implementation of SHDTs across various industries. Through this review, the paper synthesizes findings from academic journals, industry reports, and case studies, specifically from sectors like automotive (BMW and Ford), semiconductor manufacturing (TSMC and Samsung), and aerospace (Rolls-Royce and GE Aviation). Key themes identified in the literature include the integration of IoT sensors for real-time data monitoring, machine learning models for predictive analytics, and cloud-edge computing architectures for low-latency decision-making. A critical focus of the review is on the challenges faced in data quality, system integration, and cybersecurity, and how these impact the widespread adoption of SHDTs in legacy systems. The research also examines the future potential of SHDTs, emphasizing the role of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G connectivity, and blockchain in enhancing the scalability, security, and autonomy of these systems. The paper concludes with a discussion on the evolving nature of self-healing digital twins, their growing impact across various industries, and the future trajectory of innovation in digital twin technologies. The systematic review consolidates current knowledge, highlights gaps in the literature, and proposes directions for future research to address unresolved challenges in the implementation and optimization of SHDTs.
