On the implementation of flexible pendulum vibration absorbers in a multi degree-of-freedom system

Recently, research related to the dynamics of flexible pendulums continues to be developed, mainly because they have found broad applications in mechanical systems with real applications such as robotic manipulators, precise antennas as well as aerospace engineering. This paper focuses on the attenuation of the dynamic response of a mechanical oscillator under resonant conditions by implementing a vibration control scheme based on the application of multiple flexible pendulum vibration absorbers (FPVA), which is more efficient than a single pendulum absorber system. The control strategy consists of the synthesis and optimum design of multiple FPVAs on a multi-degree-of-freedom structure, perturbated under harmonic excitation, where each of the absorbers can be coupled in a linear or non-linear configuration depending on the vibration mode to be attenuated in the primary system. Based on an energy approach, an analytical model is proposed to establish the tuning conditions of the multiple flexible pendulum vibration absorbers which is validated by using a finite element model. The theoretical, numerical and experimental formulation is performed, showing consistency and better attenuation properties compared with the conventional pendulum tuned mass damper.
