Green human resource management practices and sustainable development in India: A systematic literature review and future research agenda

The competing needs of sustainable development and economic growth epitomise India's aspiration to ascend the higher-income ladder. Human capital, undeniably is a profound asset that can translate this vision into reality. The current study investigates antecedents, mediators, and outcomes of green human resource management practices towards sustainable development from a comprehensive review of 57 scholarly articles from 2015 to 2024. This systematic literature review employed the Theory, Context, Characteristics and Methodology framework. The research identifies that Indian organisations are adopting sustainable practices due to policy mandates, organizational capabilities, employee empowerment, and environmental knowledge. Furthermore, practising sustainable human resource management cultivates personal moral norms, a green mindset, green innovation, and organisational citizenship behaviour towards the environment. Sustainable human resource management improves green satisfaction, organisational commitment, and employee performance. The study's novelty includes a unified conceptual framework that elaborates on the drivers and outcomes of sustainable human resource management. Additionally, we propose research agendas for future research.
