Attitudes of the Chinese in the Philippines in Times of Social and Political Upheaval

Abstract The position of Chinese Filipinos in the Philippines remains uncertain despite their being Filipino citizens. Allegiance to the Philippines is questioned in light of the growing tensions between China and the Philippines. With the Tsinoy community’s experience with political and economic upheavals, this paper documents the far-reaching impact of various political and social events in Philippine history regarding shaping the identity and directions taken by the Tsinoy community, culminating in the 2022 Philippine national elections. Data collected through surveys and interviews reveal a generational divide: younger Tsinoys show greater integration and advocate for democratic values, while older generations maintain loyalties tied to the Marcos regime. The Chinese-Filipino status in Philippine society continues to feed into the attitudes, actions, and decisions Chinese Filipinos take in the ever-changing political and social landscape of the Philippines. Continued community dialogues are needed to bridge generational perspectives and encourage inclusive civic engagement.
