Study of the oil-collecting and oil-dispersing properties of quaternary ammonium salts formed by hexadecane and heptadecane acids with triethanolamine

At present, the wide application of surfactants in various fields such as detergents, foam and emulsion stabilizers, fluorogens, hydrophobizers, corrosion inhibitors makes their synthesis considered one of the urgent issues. The article presents the results of a study of the properties of quaternary ammonium salts of hexadecanoic and heptadecanoic acids, which are monobasic carboxylic acids, with triethanolamine (TEA) in distilled, drinking and sea water contaminated with Balakhany oil. The surface-active properties of products of various concentrations of these complexes were calculated using a tensiometer, and the content of elements was calculated using a calculation method. Analysis of the composition of new complexes synthesized in laboratory conditions by infrared spectroscopy method shows that the reaction proceeds according to the indicated scheme. Comparing the complexes of both acids with TEA, it can be seen that the TEA complex of hexadecanoic acid is superior due to its oil dispersing properties in drinking and sea water.A comparison of the surface activity properties of the new complexes formed by both acids with TEA shows that as the mass fraction of carbon in the complexes increases, more surface activity properties are displayed. The comparison of the surface activity property of the new complexes formed by both acids with TEA shows that as the mass fraction of carbon in the complexes increases, the surface activity property is more. By reducing it to 34.4 mN/m, the quaternary ammonium salt formed by heptadecanoic acid with TEA shows high surface activity by reducing the surface tension from 71.98 mN/m to 33.3 mN/m at that boundary. Quaternary ammonium with TEA of hexadecane and heptadecanoic acid is 11.7 %, the mass share of carbon in its salts is 65.1 % and 66.8 %, the mass the share of hydrogen is 11.6 % and, the mass share of oxygen is 19.7 % and 19.1 %, the mass share of nitrogen is 3.6 % and 3.3 %. Solutions of quaternary ammonium salts of hexadecanoic and heptadecanoic acids with triethanolamine (TEA) of different concentrations show a mixed effect in Balakhani oil-contaminated seawater.
