Sensitivity analysis of oil and gas production to changes in various parameters with different well completion methods as a result of increased drainage area

The efficient development of hydrocarbon fields and the strategic planning of production wells are essential to achieving maximum economic returns and sustainable resource utilization over the field’s lifespan. A critical aspect of this process involves determining optimal well spacing to balance effective reservoir drainage with cost efficiency. The spacing between wells and the interplay between oil or gas production wells significantly influence reservoir performance, recovery efficiency, and overall project economics. Proper planning requires a meticulous evaluation of these parameters to ensure that each well contributes to maximum resource recovery without redundancy. This study focuses on the concept of the drainage area, a fundamental parameter in reservoir engineering that defines the effective region influenced by production well. By accurately determining the drainage area, operator companies can optimize well placement, maximize reservoir contact, and avoid unnecessary drilling. The analysis also explores the productivity of horizontal wells, which have become a cornerstone of modern hydrocarbon production due to their ability to enhance reservoir exposure and improve recovery rates. Horizontal wells offer unique advantages but also present challenges in determining their effective drainage area and productivity potential. To address these challenges, this study provides a comprehensive framework for evaluating reservoir productivity and well spacing. It introduces key equations and methodologies for estimating the drainage area and assessing the performance of horizontal wells under various geological and operational conditions. These tools are designed to guide decision-making during the planning phase, ensuring a balance between technical feasibility and economic viability. Additionally, the interrelationships between production wells within a field are examined to ensure an integrated approach to field development. This holistic perspective minimizes interference between wells and enhances the overall efficiency of hydrocarbon extraction. By synthesizing these concepts, the study contributes to the broader understanding of field development strategies, offering practical insights for optimizing well placement, reducing costs, and achieving sustainable hydrocarbon recovery.
