Mitigation of Lateral Excitation-Induced Liquid Sloshing in a Rigid Cylindrical Container Using a Corrugated-Hole Baffle

This study examines three-dimensional (3D) liquid sloshing within a rigid cylindrical container equipped with an innovative corrugated-hole anti-sloshing baffle. Due to the non-circular holes in the baffle, the container lacks axisymmetric characteristics, making the 3D sloshing problem incompatible with planar simplifications. To assess the performance of this new baffle, an enhanced fluid subdomain method is employed to solve for the natural sloshing frequencies and modes. This enhanced method utilizes a standardized modal function decomposition across all subdomains, ensuring a uniform format of eigenfunctions for subdomains of the same type. Comparative studies are conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method, and a parametric study investigates the influence of corrugated hole parameters on liquid sloshing frequencies and steady-state response. Using FLUENT software, a numerical analysis of vortex energy dissipation at the edges of the corrugated-hole baffles is performed. The multi-modal method, based on the natural sloshing modes, is employed to solve the nonlinear sloshing responses and validate the FLUENT numerical model. The numerical results indicate that as the wave-form number of the corrugated holes increases, the vortices generated at the baffle edges dissipate more of the sloshing energy.
