Research on the Isolation Performance of Multi-Stage Isolation Friction Pendulum Bearing Based on Shear Thickening Fluid

As an effective means to reduce the seismic response of buildings, seismic isolation technology has been applied in practical engineering. To address the problem that the friction pendulum system may produce excessive isolation response under the large seismic force, a multi-stage isolation friction pendulum bearing with adaptive properties, i.e. shear thickening fluid-friction pendulum system (STF-FPS) composite bearing was designed and developed in this paper. The shear thickening characteristics of the shear thickening fluid are utilized to improve the performance of the friction pendulum bearing. The dynamic theoretical analysis of the isolated structure with the STF-FPS composite bearing shows that the seismic response of the isolated structure can be greatly reduced by properly adjusting the curvature radius of the bearing and the STF ratio. The dynamic time history analysis of the shaking table test results shows that the isolation performance of the STF-FPS composite bearing isolation structure is improved to different degrees compared with the nonisolated structure and the friction pendulum bearing isolation structure under the ground motion with different peak ground accelerations and shows the effect of multi-stage isolation effect. With the increasing of SiO 2 mass fraction of shear thickening fluid in the energy dissipation device of the STF-FPS composite bearing, the isolation performance of the bearing is improved under different ground motions. Compared with the nonisolated structure, the peak floor acceleration can be reduced by 55.5%.
