Spanish Sculpture and its Reproduction: Stirling Maxwell and the Second Edition of the Annals of the Artists of Spain
Stirling Maxwell’s Annals of the Artists of Spain (1848) is considered a landmark in historiography of Spanish art. However, its author was dissatisfied with many aspects and planned a second edition, undertaking a research trip to collect material. Through examples of sculptures by Damián Forment, Juan de Juni and Alonso Cano, this article examines how Stirling intended to extend coverage of Spanish sculpture and documents his efforts to obtain illustrations of them. Not all the material was included in the posthumous publication of 1891. Nevertheless, Stirling’s research for it raised key issues within nineteenth-century discourse on Spanish art in Britain and Ireland.
