An analysis of the university waste bank role in increasing students’ environmental awareness

Abstract This study aims to analyze the role of university waste bank in improving students’ environmental awareness. This qualitative study uses a case study method with a descriptive approach. The data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis at Sebelas Maret University which has implemented a waste bank program. The study results indicate that the university waste bank plays a significant role in increasing environmental awareness and attitudes among students, through education, active participation, and collaboration. Education provided through the waste bank program, such as waste management training and environmental campaigns, has succeeded in increasing students’ understanding of the importance of protecting the environment. Students’ active participation in waste bank activities, such as waste sorting, recycling, and reducing plastic waste, also indicates the changes in more environmentally friendly behavior. In addition, collaboration between the waste bank, student organizations, and environmental communities has created positive synergy in efforts to increase environmental awareness. Innovative activities involving students, such as recycling competitions and research projects on environmentally friendly technologies, have strengthened students’ commitment to create sustainable environment. This study recommends expanding the waste bank program to other universities and developing more innovative strategies to increase student involvement in environmental conservation efforts.
