Narrativas de mujeres mexicanas sobre sus no-maternidades
Based on an exploratory case study, and through auto-ethnographic exercises and reflections, this paper analyses the configurations of (non) choice and acceptance of being a non-mother of a group of Mexican women from and towards feminist identities. The three profiles of non-mothers proposed in this paper expone discomforts, confusions and life projects that challenge the heteropatiarchal system, but also themselves. The transition towards the assumption of being non-mothers implies a critical process of questioning mandate of motherhood and positioning self-care for women first. Non-maternal lifestyles need to be highlighted because they reflect a break with the romanticisation of motherhood and alternatives for women's development from a counter-hegemonic perspective, as well as offering an opportunityfor freer choices for future generations.
