Analysis of land use changes using geographic information systems in Cibitung District 2013–2023

Abstract The pressure of increasing land demand has led to significant changes in land use across various regions, including Cibitung District. This study aims to analyze and evaluate these changes in land use over a decade, from 2013 to 2023. The research employs spatial analysis techniques by overlaying land use data from 2013 and 2023 using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and satellite imagery. The primary land use categories identified include settlements, agricultural land, open land, industrial areas, vegetation, and water bodies. Findings reveal a considerable shift from open land to bushland, accounting for 30% of the total change. In addition to this, the study highlights a moderate expansion in settlement areas driven by urbanization pressures, as well as slight increases in industrial land use. However, the overall types of land use categories remained relatively stable despite the transformations within each type. Factors such as accessibility, proximity to main roads, and economic growth significantly influence these land use changes, as the population favors areas close to economic and social activities. The implications of these shifts include a reduction in agricultural land, which may impact local food production, and increased flood risk due to loss of vegetation. The study concludes with recommendations for balanced land management to support sustainable urban development and environmental conservation.
