1008 Intraoperative Localization of a Novel 1024-Contact High-Density Electrode Array for Advanced Neural Decoding

INTRODUCTION: The advancement of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) is contingent on our capability to accurately decode neural signals. The recent development of novel high-density surface electrode arrays will facilitate the capture of more nuanced neural activations, enhancing our understanding of cortical functions. However, there is a need to develop precise localization protocols to better capture electrode contacts in relation to cortical anatomy. METHODS: We utilized a novel, 1024-contact high-density electrode array intraoperatively during hand gesture tasks. Electrode localization involved integrating pre-operative MRI, intraoperative CT scans, and a custom-modified electrode reconstruction software, "RAVE" (Magnotti et al., 2020). This method allowed for aggregate visualization of multiple electrode arrays implanted across trials as well as precise, high-power localization of individual contacts. RESULTS: The integration of imaging techniques and software customization enabled us to map each electrode contact to specific cortical areas with high precision. Preliminary validation of this approach was achieved by correlating the recorded neural data with the anatomical locations determined by the array localization protocol. Additionally, this protocol allowed us to generate MNI coordinates for each contact, facilitating future studies dependent on such standard and precise localization. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate that it is possible to achieve intraoperative localization of complex surface electrode arrays. This workflow is vital for the future development of BCIs, as it allows for detailed mapping of neural activity and the potential for correlating precise surface activity. The techniques developed here lay a foundational framework for utilizing high-density electrode arrays in future neuroscientific research and clinical applications.
