Application of orthogonal multi-sensor network for deep learning-based damage localization in composite laminates
This work reports a miniature (30 by 80 mm), silicon elastomer-encapsulated underwater ecosystem measurement sensor designed to record the behavior and environmental factors concerning the endangered white abalone (Haliotis sorenseni) and other morphologically similar mollusks in both captive breeding programs and in natural tidal zones. The sensor is flexible, wirelessly rechargeable, cost-effective, and optimized for survival at abalone habitat depths. It enables marine biologists to monitor and record in real time the relative location, temperature, external pressure, and underwater light conditions of an attached animal’s environment. To facilitate communications while submerged, this research explores potential acoustic and radio frequency communication techniques, with initial development utilizing Bluetooth Low Energy. Proposals to extend the battery longevity and provide passive power generation are additionally discussed.
