A Novel Multi-Scope Characterization Method for Automotive LPDDR4 Controller

The increasing dependence of automotive applications on semiconductor devices necessitates rigorous testing and characterization of the semiconductor devices. This paper presents a novel method for comprehensive electrical characterization of LPDDR4 controllers in automotive microcontrollers, a critical component enabling software-defined vehicles, ensuring reliable and high-speed data transfer. Conventional methods, such as using four-channel oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, or Automated Test Equipment, face significant limitations due to restricted channel counts, inadequate handling of source-synchronous protocols, and the inability to de-embed signals accurately. These methods are also time-consuming, prone to errors, and incapable of capturing signal integrity issues. The proposed method utilizes a 12-channel oscilloscope system with custom software, a radio-frequency multiplexer, and coaxial cables to enable simultaneous observation of all relevant LPDDR4 signals. The proposed method enhances the measurement accuracy, reduces characterization time, eliminates manual intervention, and ensures the ability to perform a comprehensive signal integrity analysis. The results show a dramatic reduction in characterization cycle time, from 108 days to 21 days, representing an 80% reduction. The proposed method overcomes the limitations of traditional techniques, providing a more reliable, more accurate and more efficient solution for LPDDR4 controller characterization in automotive applications.
