Additive‐Free, Aqueous CO 2 Hydrogenation with Ru/Polyphosphine‐Based Solid Molecular Catalysts

Abstract Molecular Ru complexes heterogenized on polyphosphine macroligands are identified as a highly active catalyst for the challenging direct hydrogenation of CO 2 in an aqueous environment. In DMSO/H 2 O a TON of 2964 is reached and a high activity is retained in pure water (TON = 1500), due to the stabilizing effects of the polyphosphine on the reaction. The chemical structure of the catalyst was elucidated through NMR, XPS, and PDF analysis. Comparison with the homogenous analog revealed that 44% of the activity is retained in the heterogeneous catalyst. The catalyst proved to be active over five hydrogen storage cycles, with no CO formation, and minor deactivation between 14–32%.
