Nano-pulsed laser therapy (NPLT) system for therapy of traumatic brain injury patients

Our multidisciplinary team has developed a noninvasive, optoacoustic, transcranial nano-pulsed laser therapy (NPLT) and shown that in animal models of traumatic brain injury (TBI) NPLT improves neurocognitive outcomes, reduces neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, and normalizes neurogenesis. In this work we developed a secondgeneration NPLT system for the treatment of patients with TBI and tested it using tissue phantoms in preparation for clinical studies. The system combines a console, a fiber-optic system, and a patient interface. We utilized tissue phantoms with optical properties and thicknesses similar to that of human skull and scalp. We measured the transmission of 808-nm pulsed light generated by the system through the tissue phantoms to identify the most efficient and safe dose for the treatment of TBI patients, based on the optimal parameters identified in our animal studies.
