Ordering Chargeable Traffic and Network Security Fundamentals

In order to carry real-time traffic like video, IP networks, especially intranets recently began to deal with different levels of priority for communication flows. Traffic ordering is the key to meeting the demands of real-time traffic, which are much more stringent than mere data traffic, such as file transfers. Now that the question: “How should we specify different levels of priority?” is reasonably understood, the challenge is to answer this new one: “How should we charge for these different levels of priority by understanding Network Security?” This document discusses the introduction of Quality of Service (QoS) in the corporate network of a large industrial enterprise. Its main contributions are a charging model for different types of traffic with different levels of priority, a network simulation for verifying the impact of a QoS implementation and detailed understanding of network security nitty-gritties.
