Research on the Relationship Between Parental Absence and Alcohol Consumption Behavior among College Students Aged 18-24

In contemporary society, the health and behaviour of college students are highly valued. Alcohol consumption is particularly common among university students and has far-reaching consequences. Changes in family structure have increased parental absence. However, there is a paucity of research examining the impact of parental absence on risky drinking among adolescents in the general population. This article aims to investigate the effects of parental absence on the drinking behavior of college students aged from 18 to 24. Using a convenience sampling method, the study collected survey data from 254 college students in Wuhan with a history of alcohol consumption. The findings indicate that parental absence may indirectly foster drinking behavior by impacting the psychological well-being, social interactions, and values of college students. This article identifies a potential correlation between parental absence and the drinking behaviour of college students, and further examines the psychological processes and social factors that may underlie this relationship.
