Author’s note in literary periodicals of the first third of the 19th century as a standard of research material

The aim of the research is to identify the exemplary representation of the author’s note as a subject of research, and the methodological and practical justification for studying the author’s note based on the material of periodicals. The article analyzes and compares classical and modern domestic and foreign paradigms of research on the subject, the range of methods inherent to them, the range of scientific problems, as well as their choice of representative material. A reasoned attempt is made to define the author’s note in periodicals as a standard of research material. An empirical analysis of author’s notes in periodicals is carried out. The scientific novelty consists in the introduction of extensive material from literary-critical periodicals of the first third of the 19th century into the study of the author’s note, as well as in considering the latter in light of the material presentation of the text of the work. As a result of the research, it was demonstrated that such classical problems as the status of the author’s note in relation to the text of the work, its interchangeability with a fragment of the main text, can be solved more effectively taking into account the inclusion in the study of the aspect of the material representation of the work, namely, aspects of page composition and typographical design. It was shown that in periodicals, the author’s note has the greatest formal and substantive variability.
