Bifid mandibularkanal – ein presentasjon av to kasuistikkar

English summary Bifid mandibular canal - a presentation of two cases Nor Tannlegeforen Tid. 2025; 135: 204-9. Bifid mandibular canals (BMC) are rare findings not well reported in anatomy textbooks. Knowledge of this anatomical variant is important particularly in relation to surgical and endodontic procedures in the mandible. We present two cases with bifid mandibular canals referred for removal of mandibular wisdom teeth. The preoperative radiographic evaluation of a mandibular canal variation is necessary to avoid intraoperative and postoperative complications such as failure of mandibular block anesthesia, bleeding, paresthesia and traumatic neuroma. BMC detected on orthopantomograms (OPG) should be confirmed by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) before surgical intervention in the relevant region. High resolution MRI should be considered in cases that cannot be clarified by OPG or even CBCT. The presence of BMC does not necessarily mean a higher risk for complications if one is aware of its presence and necessary precautions are considered.
