Wireless fire detection systems: benefits, limitations and applicability within the built environment

Wireless fire detection systems are emerging as the future of fire detection and alarm systems, however, there has previously been limited studies undertaken which have addressed the benefits and limitations of this technology within the built environment. This study provides a systematic literature review of the benefits, limitations, and applications for wireless fire detection and alarm systems, with the purpose to identify such items as relevant to the use of these systems within the built environment. The review notes gaps within the current literature, identifies industry trends and current studies and recommends subsequent scope for future academic review. The results have been categorised according to the current areas of interest which relate to the adoption of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) within the built environment. Finally, areas recommended for future research to address the knowledge gap have been presented, to inform the direction of future studies.
