Life cycle carbon emission characteristics of pumped storage and new energy storage

Pumped storage and new energy storage play an important role in promoting the realization of the “Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality” target and constructing a new type of power system, but they are facing some key bottlenecks in terms of technology, low carbon and environment in the current research. Combined with the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method, we select actual pumped storage and new energy storage projects, measure their life cycle carbon emission, compare and analyze their life cycle carbon emission characteristics from two perspectives of life cycle segments and carbon emission inventory source types, and carry out a series of sensitivity analyses of key impact factors, which show that the new energy storage is significantly better than pumped storage in terms of low-carbon performance. Finally, carbon reduction measures are proposed from different parts of the life cycle to promote the synergistic development of pumped storage and new energy storage, and to provide strategic support for accelerating the realization of the “Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality” target.
