Optimal operation and value quantification method for the integrated development of nuclear power and pumped storage
Under the strategic context of the "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality" targets, establishing a new-type power system is a crucial initiative. Nuclear power, as a form of energy that has been the subject of intensive development in China, is a clean and environmentally friendly source of energy. However, it lacks flexibility, making it challenging to meet the load-following demands brought by renewable energy generation. Pumped storage, as the fundamental component of the proposed power system, is integral to the system's capacity substitution, flexible regulation, and other key functions. Accordingly, this paper proposes the concept of Nuclear-Pumped Storage Integration operation. Firstly, considering the operating characteristics of nuclear power plants and pumped storage, a Nuclear-Pumped Storage Integration model is constructed. Secondly, a coordinated operation model of the power system with Nuclear-Pumped Storage Integration is constructed. In addition, a benefit assessment index system is proposed to quantify the comprehensive value of Nuclear-Pumped Storage system. Finally, through simulation analysis using IEEE standard cases under seven typical scenarios, the results indicate that integrated Nuclear-Pumped Storage operation enhances the load-following capability of the power system, addresses the flexibility shortcomings of nuclear power, and promotes the integration of renewable energy.
