The formation and development of Australia's electricity financial market and implications for China's electricity market development
The electricity financial market, as an important component of the electricity market, is developing towards a more mature and refined direction, driven by the global energy transition, increasing market volatility, and technological advancements. The construction of the electricity financial market is essentially part of the electricity system reform, representing a mature stage following the deepening of these reforms. It differs from general markets as well as from securities and futures markets, primarily due to the public safety aspect of electricity; the safe operation of the power grid is a prerequisite for the normal functioning of the market. This article uses Australia as an example to illustrate the development of its electricity financial market from multiple aspects, including the history of electricity reform, the development of electricity financial derivatives, the design principles of market mechanisms, and connection mechanisms. Finally, it draws insights based on the current state of China’s electricity market construction.
