Robert Harington on Trends in AMS Publishing
What are the main challenges you see for AMS journal publishing over the next few years?A: For as long as I've been in publishing, since 1991, there's always been things out there that may be cast as either a doomsday scenario, or as an opportunity. And nothing ever quite works out the way that you expect. It's never as bad as it seems, and there is always opportunity to make things better. My priority is to serve the mathematical community and the membership of the AMS.Everything we do is for mathematics and for mathematicians. And by mathematicians I mean from high schooler to researcher, not leaving out those who are in the library world, funding agencies, and professional settings. So that's our priority. It's not about satisfying shareholder value. The goal is to be sustainable financially, because we need to be able to contribute to the operating income of the society. But equally the mission is to disseminate mathematics of many different types and levels to the mathematical community.
