Effect of Grid Structure Topology on Dynamic Properties of 3D-Printed Al–Cu–Mg–Si Alloy

This paper describes dynamic properties of AK6 aluminum bulk-structured samples characterized by different grid structure topology and synthesized by selective laser melting. Tests are carried out at quasistatic strain rates of $$10^{2}{-}10^{3}$$ s $${}^{-1}$$ according to the Kolsky method using a split Hopkinson bar. Deformation curves are constructed. The offset yield strength and the tensile strength are calculated. Measurement results are compared for samples of the following grid structures: face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic, and gyroid-type triply periodic minimal surface. The effect of the geometric characteristics of gyroids (cell size and wall thickness) on the strength properties of the samples is described. It is shown that gyroids have improved characteristics at the same material density. Grid metal materials obtained by additive technology can be used in engineering to reduce the weight of structures and minimize destructive high-energy mechanical effects.
