This contribution is part of the history of mentalities, where an idea has deeply marked the psychology of peoples, the belief in hell and the devil. This, which cannot be separated from the notion of sin, constitutes one of the fundamental features of eschatology, from the first centuries of Christianity. If some affirm the existence of hell, others think that it is rather a creation of the imagination of man. The author's concern is not to decide in favor of one thesis or another. Rather, he tries to examine how the idea of hell has been understood throughout history. Particular emphasis is placed on the Congo, through what he calls "kindokism", where the figure of the devil, the demon is at the heart of the agenda of the new spirituality. Here, the situation is reminiscent of certain periods of history, notably the European Middle Ages, with however the variations that it reveals, and which are intimately linked to the idea of the Devil and death. Inspired by a "History of fear and sin" by J. Delumeau and a "Short history of hell" by R. Joly, which form the basis of this contribution, the study presents a representation of hell, of Satan, which can only be considered in the perspective of the long term and which reveals the part of the irrational in man and where demons, the Devil, Hell, the empire of Evil, concretize his fears, religions both his fears and his desires, a "true archaeology of the imagination" which awakens "the memory of sometimes thousand-year-old myths and attempts to answer a series of questions relating on the one hand to the existence of Satan and on the other hand to this hell, a place of perdition and torture", inhabited by the first.

Abstract

This contribution is part of the history of mentalities, where an idea has deeply marked the psychology of peoples, the belief in hell and the devil. This, which cannot be separated from the notion of sin, constitutes one of the fundamental features of eschatology, from the first centuries of Christianity.
