Entrepreneurial behavior of farmers: A bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review

Entrepreneurial behavior holds significant potential for effectively managing the technical and commercial dimensions of agricultural enterprises. The gaps noted in the reviews were the lack of systematic and methodological approaches, theoretical frameworks, key characteristics, and insufficient attention to the future research agenda. Hence, to enhance the comprehension of the various theoretical frameworks underpinning the entrepreneurial behaviors exhibited by farmers, a systematic review was performed using the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Following the quality assessment, 46 papers out of 99 from the Scopus, Lens.org, and Google Scholar databases were included. The findings on entrepreneurial behavior were analyzed via the TCCM framework. Bibliometric analysis via R Studio indicated that more research was undertaken in India. To date, a total of five international collaborations and seven national collaborations have been established, highlighting the inclusive and collaborative nature of our research community. These collaborations offer the potential to generate novel perspectives, facilitate cross-cultural interaction, and have a global impact in the future. A study that utilized the psychological framework has received a greater number of citations. “The Theory of Planned Behavior” was the most commonly used theory, followed by the “Theory of Delmar.” “Psychological Theory of Entrepreneurship” has been widely used in recent studies. The predominant focus of the studies was on the agricultural sector. Entrepreneurial behavior was studied as a dependent variable in the majority of the studies, and many factors influenced it. Future studies should prioritize entrepreneurship among rural women, psychological perspectives, agricultural policy initiatives, mixed methodologies for data collection, comparisons between different farmer groups, and the inclusion of family demographics.
