2×2 Reconfigurable Phased Array Antenna With Circular SRR For 5G Applications

In this paper, a 2 by 2-element reconfigurable phased array antenna at 4.76 GHz for 5G wireless communication is proposed. A split-ring resonator structure is embedded in the proposed antenna, which is compact with a switchable feeding network. Optimized element spacing along the x-axis is 29.2 mm and along the y-axis is 32.2 mm to ensure effective beam steering without the occurrence of grating lobes. With a switching system using six-pin diodes, continuous beam steering from -46° to +50° is realized. The antenna array exhibits a maximum gain of 9.08 dBi, reflecting its high-performance capability. Interestingly, the antenna array, which has an overall thickness of only 3.2 mm, has proved to be quite adequate for low-profile 5G applications. This work corresponds to the growing demands for small-sized, efficient, and multi-compatible antenna solutions within the frameworks of next-generation wireless communication systems.
