KMonPro: A Kernel-Level Module for Comprehensive Resource Monitoring and Process Insights in Linux Systems
This paper introduces a new kernel module, KMonPro. Design elements of the Linux-based operating system consider bringing perfectly accurate real-time monitoring of system resources. Unlike typical monitoring utilities, KMonPro directly interacts with the kernel so that metrics such as CPU usage, memory statistics, network activity, and process detail have 100% capture at all times. It has at its heart a lightweight monitoring script that continually captures data from the interface ‘/proc/kmonpro’, thereby achieving constant analysis of system performance with little overhead. A case study on KMonPro illuminates very well the ability of KMonPro to generate accurate and trustworthy resource metrics but demonstrates very detailed usage patterns important for fine-tuning and debugging systems. This study significantly contributes to monitoring systems by developing a strong kernel-level solution that merges real-time analytics with resource management. KMonPro constitutes the most significant improvement over other operating system utilities in presenting comprehensive monitoring abilities that assist the system administrator as well as researchers in improving system transparency besides making intelligent decisions on what kind of resource management policies to adopt.
