Advanced Techniques in Intrusion Detection for Botnet Traffic Analysis

With the increasing digitization of daily activities, including banking, shopping, education, and investments, various aspects of life have shifted to the online space. However, this transition has led to a rise in malicious cyber activities, ranging from financial theft to identity fraud. As critical services like banking are now fully online, cybercriminals continuously attempt to exploit vulnerabilities to steal sensitive information, leading to identity theft and financial losses. One significant attack vector in this domain is the botnet. A botnet consists of a network of compromised devices controlled remotely by malicious actors. These botnets are responsible for various malicious activities, including spamming, Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, click fraud, and cryptojacking. The decentralized nature of botnets makes them challenging to detect, as they employ advanced evasion techniques like encryption and rapid IP changes. These features allow botnets to scale quickly and execute large-scale attacks, making them an ongoing threat to both individuals and organizations. This paper explores various Intrusion Detection System (IDS) techniques, including machine learning-based anomaly detection and behavioral analysis, that can enhance botnet detection. By addressing the evolving nature of botnet attacks, these techniques provide more effective countermeasures, improving cybersecurity defenses against this persistent threat.
