Harmonic Analysis of EVs Connected to Grid and Suppression of Harmonics with FLC

The deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) offers an effective and environmentally friendly alternative for transportation. However, the widespread use of non-linear loads by both consumers and industries has led to increased harmonic distortion in modern power systems, which is a significant and harmful issue. Harmonic currents, which do not contribute to active power, need to be minimized to enhance power quality. So, the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) Topology has been developed to prevent grid problems when dynamic loads are connected to the grid side. The primary objective of this study is to design an active power filter employing both proportional-integral (PI)and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and further evaluate the performance of the controllers when connected to dynamic loads, specifically a converter and a DC motor load of an electric vehicle. The FLC is efficiently designed with a set of rules and values and adjusted to achieve high accuracy without deviation. The computation results of both PI and FLC are shown graphically using MATLAB for better understanding. FLC has been employed in the charging station, enhancing the grid performance with significantly reduced total harmonic distortion (THD). Unlike PI controllers, FLCs perform better when the system has various non-linear loads. The THD of the current injection using the PI controller is 11.98%, while with FLC, it significantly decreased to just 2.98%.
