Enhancing Functional Validation of Communication Systems Using Markov Process-Based Channel Models

The dynamic nature of wireless communication channels presents significant challenges for system validation. Markov processes, with their ability to model probabilistic transitions between states, offer a powerful tool for capturing the time-varying characteristics of these channels. This paper explores the application of Markov process-based channel models in the functional validation of communication systems, using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) as a case study. The authors employ a three-state Markov model to simulate the channel conditions encountered by an OFDM system. Their methodology involves generating random OFDM data, modulating it using Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM), and passing it through a Markov process-simulated channel. To ensure robust performance evaluation, the authors utilize Monte-Carlo simulations to generate a large number of random channel realizations, providing statistically significant results. System performance is evaluated by calculating the Bit Error Rate (BER) for various scenarios, including varying packet sizes and numbers of packets. The simulation done in MATLAB® R2023b show that the average BER for the OFDM system is significantly lesser when Markov process is employed to validate the channel before transmission. The results demonstrate that the Markov process-based channel model, combined with Monte-Carlo simulations, effectively captures the dynamic behavior of wireless channels, providing a realistic and flexible framework for functional validation. This study highlights the potential of Markov process-based models and Monte-Carlo simulations to enhance the reliability and accuracy of communication system validation, offering valuable insights for researchers and engineers in the field.
