Tearing of subducted slab-The fundamental cause of intraplate magmatism in the eastern Asia?
<p indent="0mm">The extensive Cenozoic intraplate basalts were developed in the eastern Asia. They are characterized by geochemical signatures similar to those of Ocean Island Basalts (OIBs). They spatially correspond to the subducted Pacific slab stagnated within the Mantle Transition Zone. Here, after outlining the fundamental characteristics and major research advances of the Cenozoic intraplate magmatism in the eastern Asia in recent years, we have emphatically introduced the recently proposed genetic model of ″the stagnant slab tearing-induced mantle upwelling″ based on the integrated geochemical-geophysical studies of the Shuangyashan area in the eastern part of Northeast China, and have also summarized the unique advantages of this model in interpreting the deep settings of those Cenozoic intraplate basalts in the eastern Asia and the main challenges the model will be faced in the future.
