Childhood, Friendship and Growth in Mo Willems’ Knuffle Bunny Trilogy
This study examines three English picture books by Mo Willems—Knuffle Bunny, Knuffle Bunny Too, and Knuffle Bunny Free—published in 2004, 2007, and 2010, respectively. The series follows a family consisting of a father, mother, and their child, Trixie, focusing on her evolving relationship with her beloved stuffed rabbit, Knuffle Bunny. Blending the themes of childhood, friendship, and growth, this trilogy offers an emotionally resonant narrative. Recognized with Caldecott Honors, the series is celebrated for its unique combination of black-and-white photographs of New York locations and vibrant illustrated characters, creating a visually engaging reading experience. This paper highlights the role of English picture books in enhancing English proficiency as a foreign language, with reading—a key receptive skill—being crucial for acquiring and applying knowledge. English picture books are an effective medium for fostering literacy, supporting both language development and global communication skills.
