Metal halide perovskite for room temperature gamma‐ray spectrum detection

Abstract Radiation detection plays a critical role in areas such as homeland security, medical care, astronomical exploration, and industrial inspections. Over the past decade, metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have rapidly advanced in optoelectronic applications including photovoltaics, light‐emitting diodes (LEDs), photodetectors, and also radiation detection, owing to their high mobility–lifetime products, readily tunable bandgap, and high radiation attenuation coefficients. Yet MHPs have been extensively investigated for X‐ray detections, their application in γ‐ray spectrum detection is still in its early stages, with only a few compositions demonstrating their capabilities. The stringent requirements of γ‐ray spectrum detection that involves photon counting post high demands on the well‐controlled crystal growth of MHPs, with minimal defects and device fabrication that ensures efficient charge collection. This underscores the need for further development in advanced MHP crystal growth techniques and defect engineering. In this review, we summarize the current research progress on MHPs for room‐temperature γ‐ray spectrum detection, along with advances in synthesizing high‐quality MHP crystals and the fundamental insights gained into their structural and defect properties of MHPs. Based on the latest research achievements, we discuss the challenges and potential future directions for the continued development of MHP γ‐ray spectrum detectors.
