Quid Secundatus politicae scientiae instituendae contulit ?
Abstract Durkheim's Latin thesis on Montesquieu in 1892 has rarely been commented on. Although it is intended to complement his main thesis, The Division of Labour in Society , it also is an original reading of Montesquieu leading Durkheim to clarify his definition of the social fact and to establish some of the rules of his sociological method. The Latin thesis foreshadows the possible birth of a genuine social physics. Nevertheless, Durkheim turned away from this project and returned to the epistemological model of biology or medicine, closer to his organicist vision of the social and the politic.
