L’‘Essai sur le don’ numérisé

Abstract The ‘Essay on the Gift’, a major text in early twentieth-century French sociology, is also one of the most widely commented. Its preparatory handwritten and typed versions, however, have been used to support the study of the work rather than being considered as objects of study. Full digitisation of the corpus offers new perspectives. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the value of an extensive approach of the archives of the ‘Essay’ as a method of reinterpreting the text from an internal, comparative reading, which could reveal new versions of the article, give a more nuanced approach to it and, consequently, adjust its author's intentions in respect to previous critical readings.
