Impact of Window Glazing and Lighting Controls on Energy Performance Analysis of Public Buildings: A Case Study

This study comprehensively evaluates the energy performance of a public building at Viale Piceno, 60 (Citta Metropolitana di Milano), Milan, Italy, using the EnergyPlus-based Design Builder simulation platform. The analysis focuses on the impact of advanced glazing technologies and lighting controls on energy efficiency. A baseline configuration with triple-glazed low-emissivity windows recorded an annual energy consumption of 527,491.9 kWh., serving as the benchmark for comparative analysis. This study evaluates various upgrade scenarios to assess their influence on heating, cooling, and overall energy performance, including SageGlass (available in double- and triple-glazed formats), thermochromic glazing, and lighting control. SageGlass ClimaPlus Green glazing and lighting controls demonstrated the highest efficiency gains, reducing total energy consumption by up to 37.3%, primarily through substantial cooling demand reductions. This research highlights the potential of advanced technologies to enhance energy efficiency, lower costs, and promote sustainable public infrastructure.
