Smart manufacturing and management system for efficiency enhancement

Smart manufacturing has exponentially grown in an industrial context, globally resulting in a prime national strategy. Interconnecting and converging various non-flexible technologies within an industrial context is the main barrier to its adaptation and implementation. The challenge of interconnecting multi-characterized manufacturing systems with cyber and providing streamlined real-time interfacing is a fundamental issue. This research focuses on the development of Smart Manufacturing and Management System (SMMS) framework to address the manufacturing challenges in cable manufacturing, by acquiring manufacturing characteristics and converging to cyber systems for smart analytics interfacing physical machines, virtual systems, managers, and shop floor operators. The proposed SMMS has been implemented in cable manufacturing and it has shown the potential to reduce the manufacturing time to $\mathbf{\sim 2 0 \%}$ and cost to AUD $\mathbf{1 8 0, 0 0 0}$ per annum. to the traditional process. So, it’s clear that SMMS implementation will enhance manufacturing efficiency, quality with faster decision capability, reduced wastage and cost. Additionally, given the challenges faced by manufacturing, this system adopted will reduce the fierce global manufacturing competitiveness, especially for low-volume personalized products.
