Low-Cost Solution for Vehicle Collision Avoidance for Smart and Safe Transportation

Moving towards smart transportation heavily depends on the state-of-the-art collision avoidance system. Intersections and inattention of drivers cause accidents. The latest vehicles have an inbuilt collision avoidance system, however, implementing it on existing vehicles is not practical as it requires hardware and sensors. Due to non-practicality and the cost incurred for the installation, existing vehicles will be far away to set up this kind of system. In this article, we propose and develop a technique based on combined Haversine and Vincenty’s formulae for collision avoidance systems to detect and warn the driver of the possibility of a collision. Our technique is incorporated into a mobile application and can be easily installed on users’ mobile. Our proposed work measures vehicle coordinates and distance between the vehicles. The prototype app warns by beeping if any other vehicle approaches around the vehicle at high speed. Further, the app data can be used to analyze the traffic and accordingly, drivers can decide on which road to reach in a minimal time. It also warns any vehicles coming from sides in intersections or lanes. Without additional cost for hardware devices, the existing vehicles can make use of this smart solution for vehicle collision avoidance.
