Optimising Sensor Locations and Enhancing Preventive Maintenance in Steel Trusses Using Finite Element Analysis
Truss systems are widely used in nuclear facilities due to their structural efficiency and load-bearing capabilities; they are critical for maintaining operational safety. However, they require effective monitoring to detect early signs of fatigue, stress, and potential failure. This paper explores the application of finite element analysis (FEA) in optimising sensor placement and enhancing predictive maintenance strategies for truss systems in the nuclear industry. This research found that FEA successfully identifies the areas of maximum stress within a truss and can predict a time frame of defects developing into potential failure. The paper goes on to provide insights for the strategic placement of sensors, ensuring that key locations prone to wear or damage are effectively monitored. The outcomes aim to improve predictive maintenance in engineering and enhance safety by preventing catastrophic failure in members.
