Defibrillati|on|off
Conversations on ICD deactivation can be challenging and must be approached sensitively. Patients are fearful at the end of their lives, and both they and their families do not want to relinquish hope. To them, their ICDs represent the preservation of life. As health care professionals, we must tread carefully in the pursuit of a shared understanding and identification of the best path forward. We support sensitive discussions on deactivation at various points along the patient’s journey, particularly when they develop comorbid conditions or when signs of cognitive impairment become apparent. This will avoid unwelcome surprises and difficult new conversations at the end of life and will foster relationships built on trust and shared goals.
