Calcination-driven Co4+ incorporation in hydrothermally synthesized NaTaO3

Abstract A cobalt-doped sodium tantalate (NaTaO3, NTO) catalyst was synthesized via a hybrid approach combining hydrothermal synthesis with a brief calcination step. Structural characterization through X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed enhanced cobalt incorporation within the NaTaO3 matrix following the calcination treatment. This finding was corroborated by catalytic performance evaluations during liquid-phase p-xylene oxidation. The Co 3s X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis provided direct evidence of cobalt existing in the tetravalent oxidation state (Co4+) within the host lattice, indicating successful substitution at tantalum sites.
