High‐Voltage Gain DC–DC Converter for Sensorless Speed Control of BLDC Motor

ABSTRACT This paper presents a novel approach to sensorless speed control of brushless DC (BLDC) motors using the concept of a “Commutation Table”, leveraging an effective combination of quadratic boost and quasi‐Z source DC–DC converters to achieve high‐voltage gain (HVG). The proposed system addresses the challenges of maintaining consistent motor performance and efficiency in varying load conditions and input voltages, which is crucial for applications such as electric vehicles (EVs), industrial automation, and consumer electronics. The quadratic boost converter (QBC) enhances the voltage gain (VG) through a voltage multiplier cell (VMC), while the quasi‐Z source converter provides a wide input voltage range and high‐voltage boost capabilities. Together, these converters ensure robust and efficient power conversion, facilitating precise sensorless control of a BLDC motor's speed. The performance of the proposed sensorless speed control scheme for a BLDC motor is simulated using the MATLAB/Simulink software (2018a). The switching pulses for the inverter and proposed converter are generated using the OPAL/RT simulator. The simulation results of a BLDC motor are validated using the OPAL/RT simulator, confirming significant improvements in motor performance, energy efficiency, and system reliability, positioning the commutation table control as an effective solution for high‐performance BLDC motor applications.
