Endophytes unleashed: natural allies for heavy metal bioremediation

Heavy metal contamination poses significant environmental and health risks worldwide, necessitating innovative remediation strategies. Endophytic microorganisms, residing within plant tissues without causing harm, have emerged as promising bio-remediators due to their unique abilities to sequester, transform, and detoxify heavy metals. The present study explores the potential of endophytes for bio-remediation purposes, focusing on their mechanisms and applications. Endophytes employ various mechanisms to mitigate heavy metal toxicity, including chelation, complexation, precipitation, and enzymatic transformation. Their intimate association with plants enhances their accessibility to contaminated sites through plant root systems, facilitating metal uptake and accumulation. The mechanisms adapted by the endophytes in the progression of chelation, methylation, redox reactions, leaching, and the production of siderophores for heavy metal bioremediation in unleashed in the present study. Mycorrhizal fungi also aid plants in heavy metals remediation, like plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Endophytes enhancing plant growth in metal-contaminated soils and contribute to ecosystem and agricultural sustainability is elucidated in this study. Additionally, the potential for synergistic interactions with other microbial communities opens avenues for integrated remediation approaches are also discussed. Future research should focus on optimizing endophyte-plant interactions, revealing molecular mechanisms, and scaling up field applications to realize their full potential in environmental and agricultural contexts is focussed. The present study underscores the transformative role of endophytes in bioremediation and highlights their significance in addressing global challenges posed by heavy metal pollution.
