The Concept of Sonographer Peer Professional Support

ABSTRACT Peer professional support encapsulates the process where qualified health professionals from the same discipline can meet, debrief, hold reflective discussions, provide encouraging moral support for one another, and suggest guidance on how to develop further capabilities, skills, or knowledge. Sonographers can encounter emotionally challenging and demanding situations when dealing with patients or within their own workplace. Engaging with a peer network outside their immediate workplace can provide a platform for sonographers to discuss work and profession‐related issues. In this paper, the concept of sonographer peer professional support is unpacked, how it differs from supervision, mentoring, and preceptorships, and proposes potential ways to be facilitated in Australia.
