The Ingilbys of Ripley’s ‘Medieval Library’

The Ingilby family, resident in Ripley for more than seven centuries, amassed a considerable library.Central to the collection was a group of about sixty medieval manuscripts, most of them dispersed in a 1920 auction. The essay considers the development of the collection-very likely not a medieval collection, but one assembled in the late eighteenth-century-and identifies the current locations of about 80 per cent of the collection, as well as a few other manuscripts once in the library.
