Astragalustangeh‐zendanensis (sect. Incani DC.), a new species from Eastern Alborz, Iran, based on morphological and molecular evidence
Astragalus tangeh‐zendanensis (sect. Incani DC.) is described as a new species from the Eastern Alborz Mountains in Iran. This discovery is based on morphological and nrDNA ITS analyses conducted during floristic surveys between 2018 and 2024. The new species is distinguished from closely related species, such as A. gueldenstaedtiae Bunge, particularly by its pod morphology. Although both species are geographically restricted to eastern Iran, their phylogenetic placement aligns with species from the western and northwestern regions of the country. The new species occurs in Juniperus ‐dominated open woodlands on the southern slopes of these mountains within the Irano‐Turanian region, at altitudes above 2000 m. This finding provides valuable insights into the diversity of the genus Astragalus in Iran and highlights the need for conservation efforts in these underexplored regions.
